In my long career with cruising and travel, I’ve witnessed my share of crises and setbacks in the industry. But I don’t think I could have ever imagined the situation we’ve faced these past two months and counting. However, I am amazed at the strength, solidarity and compassion shown by suppliers, guests and you, our amazing travel advisors.

Where is Vicki?
Normally, at this time I’d be kicking off conference season. But working from home has allowed me to connect with travel partners in a virtual way with my weekly Coffee Talk webcast series. Every Wednesday, I’m dedicating an hour to provide information and updates regarding the situation and Royal Caribbean’s plans, take questions and offer some tips and ideas to stay motivated in this trying time.
Here are some highlights:
I discussed how I believe there are two viruses out there — the actual COVID-19 virus, but also the fear virus. And fear is the one we can most easily control. I also encouraged our listeners to start calling their clients during this time just to reach out, connect with them and make sure they’re ok, it can be so meaningful. Instead of selling, you are simply showing you care. People will remember that when they book their next trip.
Special guest speaker Juan Silva, AVP of Product Digital Sales, joined us and spoke about the Royal Caribbean Insight tool, used to locate your clients’ Future Cruise Credits. He also spoke about eQuote as one of his favorite tools to generate professional quotes with your agency logo and contact info, all designed to drive leads back to your business when the time is right. Later, guest speaker Galen Matthews, Director of Central Region Sales, joined me as we discussed virtual cruise nights and how these events are a great way to stay connected with your clients now. Travel partners have already tried this with great success. A great tip from Galen was to plan a meeting with your SAM to help with group strategy plans, action plan reviews and opportunity analysis. Most recently, Joanne Schimelman, VP of Sales and National Accounts, helped me share our deepest gratitude for the Travel Advisor community in celebration of Travel Advisor Day!

I can’t say enough about how amazing our crew has been during this entire process — from the time our ships were returning guests home, to today. He’s served guests and crew on Majesty, Anthem, Rhapsody, and Allure of the Seas, as well as Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Equinox, and Azamara Quest. We often take our health and lives for granted. He said, “When you’re ill, you realize how fragile life is. What I’ve learned through the years of nursing is to appreciate the small things in life, to love others, to accept people with different worldviews and philosophies, to care about my body and soul, and to smile and live happily.”

It’s important to think about the future and where your clients may wish to go when all of this settles down. Also, where do YOU want to go? I imagine all of us are feeling the need for a vacation more than ever. Our business will bounce back. Because destinations are still waiting to be explored, and vacation memories still waiting to be made.
